Still on a high after my Shetland visit in 2010, I compiled this set of tunes that, although not all of Shetland origin, have a Shetland connection. I first heard Inisheer played by Shetland all-stars Fiddlers’ Bid, and the club is delighted to have spent time with many Fiddlers’ Bid members over the
years. The second tune, Garster’s Dream is a popular Shetland jig, attributed to the trows (Shetland’s equivalent of trolls) by Garster, who it is believed overheard them playing it as he walked home after a wedding on the island of Fetlar. Capping off the set, Simon Thoumire’s Jig, was one of the most popular session tunes when I was in Shetland. The trio in the first tune is Jess Foot on cor anglais, Caitlin Martin on cello and Angus Downing on fiddle.
